RES. 002
Changing Room Gallery presents 'RES. 002’ featuring Corbin Shaw and Celeste McEvoy. The second in our residency’s series, we returned to the back of a garment store on Old Compton St, Soho, London.
Shaw and McEvoy showcased their distinctive art practices through performances and ceramics, respectively. Together, they breathed new life into the space, exploring themes of social commentary and family relations. Their works also challenged traditional British notions of gender and identity, merging their interests in popular culture.
McEvoy's ceramics, adapted to the limited space with no kiln, tackled issues of social mobility and domestic environments. Her pieces delved into themes of taste, wealth, and gender performance, all within the context of the mismatched exhibition space.
Meanwhile, Shaw's audio-sculptural installation delved into the topics of commodification, pub culture, and the life of his parents. His work explored how pubs have been a haven for working-class people, highlighting their significance as a place of refuge.
Despite their different approaches, Shaw and McEvoy found common ground in their work and forged a strong friendship during their month-long residency. They spent most of their days in the space, making art and blurring the lines between their working environments.
